MAXIMIZE EFFECTIVENESS AND LONGEVITY
This issue goes beyond any single Director, current or past. The state statutes and administrative code that authorize the Seattle School Board of Directors have the unintended consequence of minimizing relevant experience and maximizing instability and turnover, rather than maximizing effectiveness and longevity.
HIGH-QUALITY EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AT EVERY SCHOOL
Seattle Public Schools is a large institution of 51,215 students, 104 schools, and a $1.25 billion budget (complemented by a $619 million, seven-year Families, Education, Preschool and Promise Levy adopted by city voters). We believe, however, that the leading indicator of the health of public schools isn’t measured by the district’s size or depth of public investment, but instead by whether each student can access high-quality educational opportunity at every school in their community, consistently over time, and for every generation that follows. Currently, Seattle’s schools are not meeting this expectation.
BIGGEST AND BEST IDEAS FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS
As we continue conversations with education and community leaders, we hold at our center that our public schools exist as a public service to serve the public good. We believe that when Seattle students experience inequitable access to opportunity and success, we must be curious about what is missing? What should we do differently? We know that the biggest and best ideas aren’t limited to one neighborhood or one community in Seattle — we believe all of its schools should be portals to greatness for each and every student.
